Spectator seeks new columnist as Taki leaves after attempted rape conviction | Evening Standard
Taki's Irresistible Force | Vanity Fair | December 2006
The buzz had already started in New York: "Are you going to Taki's party?" people at Swifty's were asking one another. I remember years ago, when I first knew Taki, having lunch with him at '21.' I was writing about the 20th anniversary of the mysterious disappearance of Lord Lucan, who had shot and killed his children's nanny—mistaking her for his wife—and who had been a great friend of Taki's. It was rumored that the rich and powerful Jimmy Goldsmith and John Aspinall, who were also friends of Taki's, had helped Lucan escape from England and were still financing him in hiding. I discovered that day that, although Taki may love to gossip, he never gossips about his friends. He spent virtually the whole lunch talking to Eva Gabor, who was on the banquette beside him, seated at the next table. I didn't manage to get a single piece of information out of him about Lord Lucan or Jimmy Goldsmith or John Aspinall.
Taki is a total original, unlike anyone you've ever known. He's Greek and rich, and he has a yacht. He speaks all the languages of international social life. A great skier and a great tennis player, he even boxes occasionally, in public places. He's extremely witty, and he can be mean. He drinks too much and flirts openly with beautiful women. He also works hard. For more than 30 years, he has written a very spirited weekly column called "High Life" for the politically conservative magazine The Spectator. Additionally, with Pat Buchanan, the political analyst, Taki founded The American Conservative magazine, for which he continues to write.
His political views infuriate some of his liberal friends, but he is enormously popular, with admirers everywhere. He has enraged certain important people about whom he has written, and he has been the defendant in a few libel suits, which have cost him rather dearly. He does not hide the fact that he spent four months in Pentonville Prison in 1984, after cocaine was found on him when he was going through British customs. Indeed, he later wrote a book about the whole affair, entitled Nothing to Declare. There are not many of life's adventures that Taki has not experienced. So, when he decided to give himself a birthday party at Annabel's, in London, it became a highly anticipated social event.
Anti‐Americanism in Greece - The New York Times (nytimes.com)
There are approximately 25 K.G.B., or intelligence, officers under diplomatic cover in Greece. The new station chief is Serge Grigorevich Trokhin, a man reputed to be part of the K.G.B. section created for sabotage, assassination and subversion.
The K.G.B.'s apparent infiltration of the press is a factor in creating the anti‐American climate. Although the Greek Communists are split into a hard‐core pro‐Moscow faction, and a second; more independent group, both cliques are believed financed from outside. Three out of twelve Athenian dailies are said to get money from the Soviet or European Communist Parties. The publisher of the paper that printed the list of the C.I.A. personnel in Greece, Yannis Horn, refused to publish an offered list of K.G.B. people.
Disillusioned by Vlad - Chronicles (chroniclesmagazine.org)
Back in 2000, Vladimir Putin repeatedly petitioned for Russia to be admitted to NATO, according to the alliance’s former secretary general, George Robertson, as well as my friend, the filmmaker Oliver Stone, who has interviewed the Russian president extensively. It’s easy to forget that while Putin is now seen as a combination of Hitler and Stalin, when he replaced the drunken Boris Yeltsin in 2000, the West was eager to deal with him…
Putin’s war on woke had me cheering, especially when he urged nationalists, conservatives, and traditionalists to unite and reject multiculturalism…
Hence, I was halfway into buying a one-way ticket to St. Petersburg—then Vlad attacked Ukraine. Mind you, he had endured plenty of provocations from the West, especially when NATO’s charter insisted that war would break out if Russia went anywhere near Estonia, one of the tiny countries on Russia’s border. Now he has become the world’s biggest gangster, or so it seems to many Western minds who think that nationalism is evil and that globalism and multiculturalism are the future…
Here’s the sixty-four-dollar question, as they used to say in old quiz shows back in the fifties: Why don’t I go and live over there like so many British spies did after they were revealed to be agents of the Soviets? The answer is that I’m still an American and still like apple pie, blonde cheerleaders, jazz, black-and-white Mickey Rooney films, Robert E. Lee, the University of Virginia, Fred Astaire movies, Park Avenue, the Marine Corps, Texas, Notre Dame football games—I could go on.
Well, if old Vlad can come up with some of the above, maybe I will be taking that one-way trip to St. Pete’s sooner rather than later.
